Abstract

The Underwater Archeology Center (IAPH) has developed, over the last 20 years, an extensive program of documentation and compilation of information on historical ship-wrecks in Andalusian waters through public and private archives. At present it has about 2000 references that will allow the improvement of knowledge, protection and pres-ervation of that heritage, which is so much threatened by plunder. In order to improve the efficiency of this process, between 2018 and 2019, it has developed, together with the PRHLT Center of the Polytechnic University of Valen-cia, an innovative project (Carabela Project) that confirms the effectiveness of handwritten text recognition tech-niques (HTR) to locate and characterize digital documents in large archives with little human intervention, with the consequent saving of time and resources in the research and / or management of these collections.
