Zusammenfassung
In the current environmental awareness context, the search for substitutes of conventional oil-depending polymers is demanding the research effort to be focused on eco-friendlier polymers, from their synthesis as in their manufacture. In this sense, production of polymers coming from biological sources (such as biomass or fermentative processes) is gradually increasing owed to the improvement in mechanical and functional properties reported in recent years. Migration to more sustainable manufacturing techniques is a parallel phenomenon supported on the expansive scientific and technological development around additive manufacturing, also referred to as 3D printing. In the present review to present challenges and possibilities concerning polybutylene succinate as bio-based polymer is intended: from its synthesis to different blending and compounding strategies to prepare suitable materials, in particular for 3D printing.
