Resumen

Abstract Personal values guide the behaviour of the individual. It may tend towards lndividualism or, on the contrary, towards universalism. In times of crisis, the literature supports universalist values, such as altruism and benevolence, solidarity and giving help, andan increase in society in general and in the workplace. It also confirms that the more happiness a person feels, the more he or she tends to altruistic behaviours; vice versa: being a universalist person leads he/her to enjoy greater happiness. On this basis, we ask whether the disruption ofthe COVID-19 pandemic has increased universalist values in the general population, especially in the employed population. The following objectives are therefore established: to verify, on the one hand, whether the pandemic has led to an increase in solidarity in the people; on the other hand, whether this reaches the work context, measuring the expectations of being helped by colleagues in case ofneed; to analyze whether, ifthese facts occur, they influence the degree ofhappiness ofthe individual; and, finally, whether it can be deduced from the study that the pandemic has led to a Next Generation ofrelationships at work in this sense. The results confirm that solidarity does not seem to have been increased by the arrival ofthe pandemic. Nevertheless, workers, managers and non-managers alike have a great deal of confidence in being helped by their coworkers. It makes them feel happier, and this influence is particularly evident among non-managerial workers. Toe Next generation of labour relations is not affected in this respect, as this value already existed befare the pandemic. It would be helpful to conduct a similar study when the pandemic begins to resolve or in other territories and cultures to allow comparison.
