Abstract

This paper deals with a relevant theme of the epic poem entitled Columbeis (Rome, 1589) by Giulio Cesare Stella, the first Neolatin fully epic poem on the heroic deeds of Columbus. Firstly, the ideological, literary and religious circumstances which determine the image of the Caribbean Indians as a collective of 'Otherness' have been studied. Secondly, a series of traits, such as belligerence, threatening nudity, animality, incapacity for self-government, idolatry, naivety and sexual promiscuity, have been analyzed as means of representation of the Antillean aborigines in the work.
