Abstract
The political usage of the distant past — the Visigothic kingdom, the Islamic conquest, the ‘reconquest’ and the Spanish empire — from a national-Catholic perspective is recurring in VOX’s discourse.These references are used to support their ideas, critique those of political opponents, and provide a vision of what Spain and the Spanish people should be. In this paper, we examine the discourse’s reflection of this historical creation, its connections to contemporary issues, and its implications for the current political and social climate.
