Thematic differences by gender in the field of Library and Information Science from 2017 to 2021

Resumen

It is known that women researchers are a minority in the workforce and in scientific production. Moreover, thedisparity is even greater when looking at specific fields. Several studies have addressed the gender gap and detectedthat the perceived impact for female authors is lower than their male peers. This difference may be related tostructural factors and its basis is unclear. The current study performs a co-words science mapping analysis to findout the differences and similarities in the themes covered by female and male authors, in the field of Library andInformation Science in the period 2017-2021, and to detect differences in citation impact, in order to expose ifthese disparities are due to themes differences. The results showed that female authors are more inclined to workon themes related to health and people, and those themes proved to obtain a low performance, while male authorsaddress different themes and many of them are related to STEM, which influencestheir impact. The analysis showsthat the themes addressed by the male authors demonstrated to have more impact on the scientific community thanthe themes addressed by female authors.
