César Víchard, abbé de Saínt-Réal's nouvelle historir¡ue Don Carlos (1674) ís an example of the ways ín whích hístory and fictíon merge. By analysíng sevemeenth-century French hístoríography, especíally theworks of Antoíne Varíllas and Saím-Réal hímself, thís paper díscussesthe appearance of a hístory of anecdotes that wíll íntroduce a newparadígm ín the wrítíng of hístory. The ímportance of Don Carlos ínEngland, as anested by íts multíple edítíons, líes ín the cultural transferbet\'l"een France and England that would be vítal ín the developmentof the Englísh novel.
