Resumen

In Europe, households account for over 40% of energy consumption and produce more than 36% of greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, over 90% of Spanish residential buildings have predated the transposition of European directives on energy efficiency and energy savings. Consequently, it is crucial to assess the potential of Spanish housing to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. This study analyzes the energy, economic, and environmental impacts of envelope renovations and the integration of renewable energy sources in a multifamily housing complex across all climatic zones in Andalusia (southern Spain). The Unified LIDER-CALENER software tool (HULC) was used for energy assessments. Building adaptations included modifying the envelope, incorporating solar-thermal contributions to the domestic hot water supply, and/or installing photovoltaic energy production facilities to reduce electricity consumption. These interventions were implemented individually, in pairs, or simultaneously, resulting in seven alternative scenarios for each selected location. The findings demonstrate that European objectives can be substantially surpassed, with average energy savings of up to 93%, a 76% reduction in energy bills, and a 100% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, leading to zero-emission buildings. Furthermore, the initial investments and environmental impacts were significantly offset, rendering the interventions profitable and viable.
