Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis Estudio mineralógico y textural de la mineralización de Ni-Cu-(EGP) de Aguablanca (SW de España) 1998. Supervised by Dr. Rosario Lunar Hernández, Dr. Lorena Ortega Menor.
Doctor by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid with the thesis Síntesis de partículas magnéticas ultrafinas mediante pirólisis láser para su publicación en resonancia magnética de imagen 2004. Supervised by Dr. Sabino Veintemillas Verdaguer.
I obtained the degree in Geology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1997. During my PhD (1999-2004) in the labs of Dr. S. Veintemillas (ICMM-CSIC), Dr. S, Martelli (ENEA, Italy), Dr. P, Bonville and Dr. N. Herlin-Boime (CEA-SACLAY, France), I studied the production of magnetic NPs by laser pyrolysis for their application as contrast agent in MRI. Also, he gained extensive experience in different characterization techniques, such as DRX, HRTEM, EDX, Mössbauer Spectroscopy, and VSM. I obtained my doctoral degree in Chemistry in 2004. Afterwards, I continued my post-doctoral training in the group of Prof. Dr. Alexandra Navrotsky (University of California at Davis, USA), where studied the polymorphic structural transformations of iron oxide NPs, which occurs in nanostructures as consequence of their small size and surface defects, by high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. As results of this, I determined for the first time the enthalpy formation and free surface energy values for anhydric maghemite NPs smaller than 40 nm and stablished a model to explain the polymorphic transformations of Fe2O3 NPs from a rhombohedral to cubic and tetragonal structures. In 2006, I was installed as post doc I3P researcher at the ICMM-CSIC, where I worked in the solvothermal synthesis of acicular magnetic NPs for their use in MRI. In 2007, I obtained a CIBBER-BBN post doc position in the Institute of nanoscience of Aragon, where was the scientific coordinator of the Plataforma de RM y Nanopartículas II of the CIBER-BBN. Thus, I was in charge of developing an innovative laser pyrolysis reactor to produce hybrid NPs through the mixed of liquid and gaseous chemical precursors and later decomposition of these mixtures via laser reactions. From 2011 to 2017, I worked as Ramon y Cajal post doc researcher in the Applied Physic Department of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, where I leaded a research focused on the synthesis of magnetic and radiopaque NPs by laser ablation of solids in liquids. During this time, I carried out a Marie Curie IF postdoctoral research stage in the Department of Chemical Physics of the University of Vienna from 02/2015 to 10/2017 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. W. Kautek; one of the greatest experts in laser nano-texturing of materials by ultrashort laser pulses. Since 12/2017, I am working as associated professor in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics of the University of Cadiz, where I have leaded a research project funded by the MINECO (MAT2015-67354-R), which is focused on the Laser-assisted synthesis of ternary NPs for application as multimodal contrast agents for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Also, I granted an infrastructure project from MINECO, for a value of 501,000 €. This funding has allowed the start-up of a laser processing laboratory in the Department of Physics of Condensed Matter, for which I am the scientific head. I have participated in 28 research projects at regional, national or international level. being as principal IP in 9 of these projects. As result of these projects I have published 54 papers (33 Q1 and 17 papers as first author or corresponding author), with 1532 citations (515 in the last 5 years, more of 100 cites/year), showing an H index of 22. Moreover, I have participated in 48 scientific conferences and he has given 9 lectures as invited speaker. Since 2011, I have been carrying out an intense teaching activity, teaching Physics, Materials Science and Nanotechnology in different degrees and university masters. Within this teaching activity I have directed 6 final master's projects, 4 final degree projects and I have developed two innovation education project. Moreover, I was principal IP of two dissemination projects funded by the UCA. Also, I participate frequently in different scientific dissemination activities organized by the University of Cádiz.
