Technological challenges, as well as the success of the shipbuilding industry in Spain during the 20th century, are the result of an extensive process that took place through several stages. Dependence on overseas markets was one of the major determining factors during the first half of this century. England, with its worldwide leadership in this sector, became the main supplier for the shipbuilding industry and, in Spain, it acquired an even major presence through shareholding in companies with high strategic presence such as 'Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval', founded in 1908. The Civil War led to a period of autarchy and public State intervention. The shipbuilding industry and the military and merchant navy achieved industrial maturity during the 1960s, exporting vessels and becoming a global benchmark as was the case with ASTANO's oil tankers. All this process was also reflected in another company - Trasatlántica - that subsequently went bankrupt in the early 21st century but in whose existence we find, throughout this period, all historical vicissitudes analysed in this Thesis
