Resumo

This study examines coastal vulnerability to erosión on Cádiz' northwest coast. between the villages of Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Rota. Two photogrammetric tlights were used to reconstruct coastal evolution between 1956 and 2001 and several sources were compiled to assess human activities and land uses in the coastal zone. A semi-quantitative combination of the potenlial coastal advance/retreat and different land use types was used to assess coastal vulnerability to erosión. The results show that more than a third of the zone under study is highly vulnerable, owing to a combination of strong retreat trends (between 1.5 and 3 m/year) and urban or agricultura! uses. A forceas! of the coastline's location in 15 years devised on the basis of the coast's current evolution prediets a coastal retreat that would affecl different settlements and tourist resorts in the zone. Current coastal protective measures mainly consist in revetments and should be replaced by the artificial nourishment of deficient beaches.
