Abstract

Among the factors that can influence business profitability are the size of the company and the sector it belongs to. The results and theoretical approaches have alternated in corfirming different types of factors. A discussion has aroused about the internal and external origin of the competitive advantage. Notwithstanding that the company and its competitive atmosphere can determine its profitability, the discussion takes place in a scientific setting where the definition of profitability, size and sector are not clearly established. The way we measure the size comes from a multiple statistical procedure. The alternative definition we suggest for the sector responds to our criticism to the definition of this concept.
