Abstract

The article reflects on the role of journalism in the configuration of stories about disasters and the importance of developing a more complex narrative in these limiting circumstances. The objective of the article is to present indicators for the analysis of this type of coverage, such as the following: “Denomination of the disaster”, “Time axis of coverage”, “Relation cause / impact / consequence / solutions”, “Evocation / role of sources ”And“ Activation of technical and scientific explanations ”. We outline some considerations about a disaster in Brazil, providing examples of the coverage of an extreme rain event in the city of Rio de Janeiro. We find it difficult to analyze narratively and in depth other important issues (social and environmental) at the most shocking moment of disaster coverage. It is concluded that the indicators are points of view from which the journalistic narrative can be analyzed and increased, that is, to better understand the disaster it is necessary to use more complex but accessible schemes, reconstructing the journalistic discourse
