Resumen

The study of energy efficiency through life cycle assessment—LCA—unlike other researches that focus on minimizing direct energy consumption onlyduring exploitation and maintenance phase, allows to evaluate the environmentalimpact of a building in all its phases, considering the energy incorporated in all theprocesses involved, from the manufacture of its components, its construction, andsubsequent use until the end of its life—dismantlement—. Beginning with the studyof a couple of cases, a Sports Complex and a Center for Children Education in theirdrafting phases of the executive project—stage in which the design team definesthe technical specifications— and in order to bring on the design not only of moreefficient buildings but also more sustainable ones, a series of alternative construc-tive solutions—building envelope and lighting and air-conditioning facilities— areproposed to those originally prescribed, which, although they meet the minimumlegal requirements, can be optimized considering not only the costs incurred in theoperations and the energy efficiency in service but also the whole LCA, concludingthat it is necessary to take this factor into account when defining priorities and actionsin terms of energetic sustainability.
