Abstract
As it becomes increasingly necessary for university students to demonstrate their language competence in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), there is a growing need to develop effective, reliable and homogeneous methods of assessment which do not place excessive strain on time and manpower. Given the large number of students enrolled in Estudios Ingleses who have to be evaluated at the beginning and end of the academic course, this paper first analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the main oral assessment formats and their effectiveness, before going on to consider the possible usefulness of designing a computer-based test as an alternative to face-to-face testing.
