Abstract

The relationship between the human being and the aquatic environment throughout history has manifested itself in multiple and varied ways. This article addresses this historical link in the southernmost location on the planet, analyzing the material and symbolic role of the nautical for Yámana canoeists of Tierra del Fuego. From an ethnohistorical perspective and a transdisciplinary logic, its analyze the information from the contact with Europeans that was produced directly or indirectly from the Magallanes-Elcano expedition in 1520 and until the 20th century, generating a good amount of testimonies from sailors, military, whalers, missionaries and ethnographers.
