Abstract

The current work is the result of a first review of bibliography, cartography and other documents, such as the Ordenanzas de Castellar and others selected form the Archivo Ducal de Medinaceli, to which those of the manor of Castellar were transferred in 1818 after the estate passed to this House. Untill now, it had been assumed an Arab origin based on its toponym, however, the term has been very altered and, possibly, it was applied in Castilian times. Its constructive model is different from the eight medieval buildings preserved in the territory of the ancient Islamic province of al-Ŷazīra al-jadrā´, which coincides aproximately with the region of Campo de Gibraltar, and we have only been able to determine that it was buildt before 1510, without been able to ensure whether it was made in islamic times or under the rule of the Saavedra, Lords of Castellar.
