Resumen

En las últimas décadas se ha producido un notable incremento en la prevalencia e incidencia del sobrepeso y de la obesidad tanto a nivel mundial como en nuestro país, dentro del cual, nuestra comunidad se encuentra entre las regiones con datos más desfavorables. La obesidad eleva el riesgo de complicaciones crónicas que afectan a la salud y a la calidad de vida de la persona, se ha relacionado con un aumento importante de los costes directos e indirectos (comparados con las personas con normopeso) y, por tanto y por todo ello, si no se modifican las tendencias actuales, podría comprometer la sostenibilidad de los sistemas sociosanitarios públicos. Además, en este contexto, en los últimos años se ha producido una expansión de la cirugía bariátrica como técnica de elección en el tratamiento de pacientes con obesidad grave.
