Abstract

The grammatical term “relative” used by Restivo in his work Arte de la Lengua Guaraní (1724), for the properly relative pronouns (according to today’s grammatical terminology), as well as for personal, reflexive, reciprocal, possessive, deictic, anaphoric pronouns and for triform words, is disconcerting. To understand such uses, I have studied the meaning of “relative” (also used by Anchieta, Aragona and Ruiz de Montoya, the best exponents of the missionary Grammar of Tupi-Guarani) from the grammatical terminology of the Renaissance. This study describes each of the functions performed by the previously mentioned "relatives".
