Doctor by the Universidad de Cádiz with the thesis Ensayo de diferentes procedimientos para el arranque de un proceso de codigestión anaerobia seca de forsu y lodos de depuradora en rango termofílico 2005. Supervised by Dr. Diego Sales Márquez, Dr. Luis Isidoro Romero García.
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Cádiz in June 1996, awarded the Extraordinary End-of-Degree Prize. PhD from the University of Cádiz in April 2005 with the thesis entitled "Testing of different procedures for starting a dry anaerobic co-digestion process of OFMSW and sewage sludge in the thermophilic range", which was awarded outstanding cum laude. He has worked as a junior lecturer at the University of Cádiz since December 2000 and has been a tenured professor (senior lecturer) since December 2016. He has been a member of the research group "Engineering Applied to Bioprocesses" (TEP-993) since May 2023. Previously, he was a member of the "Environmental Technology" group (TEP-181) of the Andalusian Research Plan since 1997. His main research lines include the biological treatment of wastewater and solid waste through anaerobic digestion and composting for the production of biomethane, biohydrogen, and volatile fatty acids. In recent years, he has started working on a line of production of precursors for bioplastics (polylactic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoates) from acidogenic effluents rich in volatile fatty acids. His scientific productivity can be assessed by the publication of 44 scientific articles (37 of them in journals indexed in the JCR), 24 of which are classified in the first quartile, and by the publication of up to 4 books (including the publication of his doctoral thesis) and 6 book chapters, as well as being a co-author of 5 patents and having been a founding partner of a technology-based company (TBC). The bibliometric index "h" according to SCOPUS has a value of 19 (verified on december 1st, 2024). He currently has been evaluated and recognized with three research 6-years assessment periods, four teaching 5-years assessment periods, and the fifth level (top level) from the program of evaluation of the academic performance of andalusian government (autonomous complement program). He has participated in 24 research projects, being the principal investigator on three occasions, and in 46 external work contracts according to article 60 of the Spanish Organic Law on Universities, being responsible for the contract on seven occasions.
