Doctor by the Universidad de Sevilla with the thesis Ecología, biogeografía y diversidad de los brezales del Estrecho de Gibraltar, 1995. Supervised by Dr. Teodoro Marañón Arana, Dr. Juan Arroyo Marín.

I was born in Sevilla, Spain (October 1965), where I also attended school and University. I got a PhD in Plant Ecology in 1995. From 1995 to 1997, I did my postdoc at the former Institute for Plant Conservation (now Plant Conservation Unit, University of Cape Town, South Africa). I am a Full Professor of Botany at the University of Cádiz, attached to the Department of Biology, where I lead the FEBIMED research group. My research interests are in the areas of (i) plant biogeography, (ii) ecology of fire and evolution of Mediterranean plants, (iii) biotic interactions in carnivorous plants, and (iv) biodiversity and conservation of the herriza or Mediterranean heathland
