Abstract

Yanito (or Llanito) is a language variant spoken exclusively in Gibraltar, a British territory on the Iberian Peninsula. In this chapter we rst attempt to dene and explain what speaking Yanito actually means and consists of, before going on to examine its state and status as well as its relationship, both past and present, to other languages and language variants. In so doing, we aim to clarify certain misconceptions about Yanito and its present usage, and to analyze how it has changed and developed in recent years before going on to consider questions of its validity, stability and its future.
